The ESP32 developer board has an ESP32-WROOM-32 module on board, this is a powerful, generic Wi-Fi + BT + BLE-MCU module that is aimed at a broad target group.
The ESP32 processor used combines a CPU with 2 Tensilica LX6 cores, clocked at up to 240 MHz , and 512 kilobyte SRAM in a single microcontroller chip . It also integrates a radio unit for WLAN (according to 802.11bgn) and Bluetooth (Classic and LE). The WLAN functionsupports all common encryption methods such as WPA2. It can also act as an access point in passive mode in the WLAN. UART, I2C, SPI, DAC, ADC (12 bit) are available via the 32 pins and all GPIO pins can be used as input or output.
A wide variety of applications, from low-power sensor networks to the most demanding tasks such as voice coding, music streaming and MP3 decoding. The heart of this module is the ESP32 chip. The embedded chip is scalable and adaptable. There are two CPU cores that can be controlled individually and the clock frequency can be set from 80 MHz to 240 MHz.
The user can also turn off the CPU and make use of the power-saving coprocessor. Constantly monitor the peripheral devices for changes or violation of limit values. ESP32 integrates a wide variety of peripherals, from capacitive touch sensors, hall sensors, SD card interface, Ethernet, high-speed SPI, UART, I2S and I2C.
Analog-to-digital converters and digital-to-analog converters for processing analog signals and built-in sensors, such as an integrated Hall sensor for measuring the magnetic flux density, are provided as analog interfaces.
Internally, the ESP32 has a cryptographic unit for hardware-supported acceleration of encryption processes such as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and a coprocessor with low power consumption, which, in addition to a real-time clock, also allows the query of sensor data in standby mode. The processors are housed in the Quad Flat No Leads Package (QFN) chip housing with 48 pins (size: 6 mm × 6 mm) and this in turn on a small developer board. In addition to the processor and a serial flash memory for the firmware, these semi-finished printed circuit board modules also include the WLAN antenna and a power supply and thus allow simple applications.
